"We are individual points in the Consciousness of G-d, or the original Creative Spirit of the Universe.  We are points where It thinks through us, as us, or, as we say, G-d as mankind in mankind is mankind. ...  But the G-d that is in us is the same G-d that is Universal.  There is no wall of separation, no barrier, no place where one begins and the other leaves off.  All is One and One is All.  The creativity of thought is not dependent on the thinker.  Only the choice of thinking is dependent on the thinker.  The creative activity of thought belongs to the universe. ... One of the things we must come to understand in dealing with the Laws of Spirit is that we are always operating in a realm of Divine Law and Order." - Ernest Holmes (modified)

Last night I listened to a YouTube sermon presented by T. D. Jakes on tithing.  It was fascinating in that he stated something that few people of his theology say; he said that most people who tithe don't understand why they tithe.  He stated that people by and large tithe because their minister/pastor/preacher tells them to.  I applaud his efforts to explain his reasons for why people should tithe, yet at the same time his reasons didn't seem so reasonable to me.  When he went all the way back to the Old Testament of the Bible for his reasoning quoting from the Book of Leviticus ... he lost me.  The Bible is largely a mix of cultural traditions, allegories and for those willing to find them, spiritual principles.  Pastor Jakes' tithing lesson met the requirement for cultural tradition but it missed the mark regarding allegories and spiritual principles.  Tithing is not a spiritual principle.  It was an early Hebrew tradition
and has been passed on from generation to generation.  From Judaism.org we can read:  "[Those who are not in agriculture] give 10% of their net income (weekly, monthly or annually) and give that to worthy causes, particularly helping the poor and supporting Jewish education."  This differs greatly from the Christian theology espoused by T. D. Jakes and most Evangelical, traditional Christians and Catholics.  And although I find the Jewish concept of tithing more appealing than giving 10% exclusively to churches/religious organizations, it still does not close the circle that is a requirement of spiritual principle.

In his last Sunday morning lesson to his congregation, Dr. O. C. Smith implored his congregants to tithe or donate a percentage, especially if they were seeking to increase their financial prosperity.  Using a set percentage be it 2%, 5% or 10% impresses the subconscious mind on the activity of financial increase or decrease and so the one who is giving based on a percentage can correct the belief in consciousness or affirm the prosperity consciousness that is revealed in the hard numbers.  Although I accept this as a valid way in which to give to worthy causes and those organizations and people we support or support us, it is important to close the circle that is a requirement of spiritual principle ... and so we must learn to receive.

As the Master Mind Jesus taught Principle we are to "freely give and freely receive."  This corresponding action to our giving is Principle.  To give without receiving is to believe that others are more worthy and deserving than the giver and at some point our spirit of giving will diminish and perhaps become obligatory.  And this is the state of mind that stops us from receiving all that is ours to have, to do, or to be.  It is the "feeling" or the "spirit" in which we give that is of utmost importance, not the amount or the percentage.  This is the truth that we can find throughout our study of the Holy Bible and the writings of all the mystics who have revealed the truth.  It is our aligning ourselves with the nature of the Infinite that causes us to both give and to receive.  As we live spiritual truth we will find ourselves in tune with the infinite good and we shall give freely to that which is worthy and that which supports our faith and the things that we value.  We can know that this is a part of the truth that will set us free as we open our mind to the Spirit to elevate our awareness to realize this in our experience.

Our giving of financial support is minor in compared to the giving of love, understanding, peace and prayer.  These things are in the nature of the Spirit and our purpose is to let the Spirit express Its nature through us.  Our giving of the tithe or offerings is diminished when we fail to give of the things of the Spirit.  This is why we read in the ancient wisdom, "for G-d loves a cheerful giver" ... it is this joy in giving that draws to us the surplus that enables us to give.  We should give freely, never from a sense of lack or financial struggle or obligation.  These thoughts in our mind reveal that we have mental and spiritual work to do ... and writing a check will not displace them with the joy of knowing that G-d is giving through us.  We must first commit to the consciousness that we have something to give, always.  And we can obtain this consciousness through persistence.

The mystical Emma Curtis Hopkins wrote:
"You may know all things by a little persistence.  Therefore, cultivate persistence.  Get a good idea of what you can do and carry it out.  Keep this word:  "I am satisfied with myself."

I really appreciate these words from Emma Curtis Hopkins.  It is true that we may know all things by a little persistence ... we can know peace, and prosperity, success, health, happiness and joy ... as we use a little persistence in giving of all these things with joy.

Keep the faith!
