"Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well. Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love.” - Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pg. 14

I have previously written about "depression" (see Archives Sept. 18, 2005 and Sept. 7, 2007) and I have a request to share my thoughts about it once again.  The condition we refer to as "depression" continues to be experienced by many people all over the world.  Many people believe that conditions and circumstances "cause" depression and this belief will hold them in bondage to it.  I have learned and experienced that "all things are possible with G-d" and this includes depression ... even severe depression.

Dr. Ernest Holmes writes in The Science of Mind
"False mental causes are removed by a freshness of thought, sustained by an affirmative outlook of faith and trust in the perfection of life. ... The pure and perfect light of Spirit dissipates and dispels every discordant form, for those things which are not implanted by Divine Spirit have no law to support them. ... Treatment (affirmative prayer) straightens out consciousness by clear thinking."

I believe that faith is the essential solution to healing depression.  And, although I agree with Dr. Holmes that treatment, or affirmative prayer, straightens out our consciousness by clear thinking, it has been my experience that people who are experiencing depression seldom feel compelled to write or speak or think a spiritual treatment.  And rather than urge people to do so, I would suggest that we read treatments or affirmations that we have previously written or ones that have been written by others when we find ourselves without the energy or state of mind to write, speak or think our own spiritual treatments or prayers.  As we have learned, the Truth works independently of us, and as we read spiritual writings, the words that we read will shift our state of mind towards that which is more in tune with the Spirit.  Despair, discouragement, desperation, and fear, cannot withstand the magnetic power of truth because there is always that within us that responds to the truth even in the worst of times.

It is important to recognize when we are depressed, to acknowledge it, even if only to our self.  When we recognize it, we also learn to recognize when it is beginning to surface in our mind.  We can't heal what we are unaware of and although it would seem that most people who are depressed would know that they are, many do not.  It is also important that we recognize that we are in control of our depression; how long we stay depressed, our willingness to submit to it, and our ability to transcend it.  Even in severe cases of depression, we continue to have the power of choice ... it is inherently part of our nature.  For those of us who have experienced depression it is important that we remind ourselves every day that we have the power to choose how we will experience everything, both the seemingly good and the seemingly challenging.

As I stated before, faith is essential to healing depression.  What person of faith would not be moved by these words from the Book of Isaiah:  "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your G-d. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."   How beautiful these words are to those who have faith and how powerful they are as we accept them as the truth for us.  The Spirit is closer to us than breathing.  Closer to us than the very air that we breathe is difficult for the human mind to conceive, but as we give our attention to this Spirit in the silence of our mind, we, like Isaiah, will receive all the guidance we need to heal that which we choose to see healed.

The time to heal our unresolved spiritual, mental, emotional, physical issues is before we are in the midst of experiences that disturb our mind, body and spirit.  Each day as we consistently seek out G-d, Spirit, in the silence of our mind, turning to this Presence and Power and Intelligence in faith and trust, we acquire the gifts of the Spirit to strengthen us and to sustain us.  It is up to us to choose what fills our mind but we must make our choices when our mind is clear.

     As Dr. Holmes writes:
"The pure and perfect light of Spirit dissipates and dispels every discordant form, for those things which are not implanted by Divine Spirit have no law to support them."  There are many things we can do in the physical to support our spiritual healing of depression; we can do things for others.  As we think of the things that we enjoy doing, we can expand on these things and do them for others.  I know someone who went from participating in an exercise class, to teaching an exercise class for seniors.  And I know someone else who enjoys shopping and there are many people who need someone to do their shopping for them.  Many people are needed in our communities to assist others.  And in helping others, I assure everyone that we help ourselves.  As we serve others, we are in truth, serving G-d within us.

For all of us who feel that we cannot heal the depression that seems to overtake us, I assure you that you can't ... but, there is that within us that can ... there is that which is pressing against us, which can ... there is that which surrounds us, which can.  And we must turn to that which can, and turn to It again and again and again and again ... right now, right where we are ... all healing is done in the silence, and it begins in the silence of our mind.  We can read in the Book of Jeremiah, "I have loved you with an everlasting love" ... and this love will never fail us.

Keep the faith!
