"The Art Of Being Yourself"

The Way to a Wonderful Life Message for November 19, 2017

I believe that there is only One G-d; One Intelligence, One Power and One Spirit.  One Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient Presence that permeates the universe in which we live and the universes beyond the ones we are aware of.  We are all "reflecting" this Intelligence, Power and Spirit in our own unique way in consciousness.  In other words, our mind "filters" that part of G-d Intelligence, Power and Spirit that expresses through our soul.  Just as there may be similar patterns of "finger prints" we may have similar thought patterns with other people.  But, just like our unique set of finger prints, we are a unique reflection of G-d.  Most of us take ourselves so for granted that we fail to realize the greatness within us and just how very unique we are.

This past week I gave a presentation to seventeen elementary school children (grades one to four) on "giving thanks" and the  history of the first Thanksgiving here in America from both the Pilgrim and Native American Indian perspectives.  It was a lively session that lasted about an hour and a half and ended with one of the teachers of the school asking the children to write a thank you note to me for giving the presentation.  The teacher gathered up the thank you notes and gave them to me.  Later when I had the time to look at them I was so taken with how unique each note was created.  Even the written words "thank you" were unique to each child.  It was clearly evidence of how so very unique we are in our expression of Life.

In a world where so many want to "fit in" and so many seem to follow an almost cult-like response to politics and religion, it is good to be reminded of the words from the ancient wisdom; the Gospel of Mark 8:36
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"  When we strive to "fit in" or rely on the "opinions" of others, we lose contact with our own soul.  We are not here to live to other people's opinions or ideas or politics or religions but to "choose" that which we truly believe to be "truth" and to discard that which is not.  Even when it defies all that is believed by those around us; even those we love.

I am going to quote the great Ralph Waldo Emerson once again this week.  This is from his powerful essay, "Self Reliance"; "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried."  As we understand these words at the "soul level" we realize just as Emerson did that "that which I am to do best, only my Maker can teach me" and in this we find a greater sense of expression of our own unique greatness and ability to navigate through Life with self reliance and confidence.

And so it is!
